Where It Comes From
Kenya's coffee-growing regions — Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, and the slopes of Mount Kenya — sit at elevations between 1,400 and 2,000 meters. The combination of rich, red volcanic soil (known as "red soil" or Nitisols), two distinct rainy seasons, and meticulous processing at cooperative washing stations produces a bean of exceptional quality and consistency. Kenya is also home to the SL28 and SL34 varietals — prized for their complex fruit-forward profiles and remarkable cup clarity.
Tasting Notes
Kenyan coffee is famous for its bold, wine-like character, and ours is no exception. Expect vivid notes of blackcurrant, bright citrus, dark cherry, and a hint of brown sugar, with a full body, juicy acidity, and a long, complex finish. It's a coffee that commands attention — best enjoyed black to fully appreciate its layered complexity.
How to Brew It
Kenya's bright acidity and complex fruit notes shine brightest with brew methods that preserve clarity:
- Pour-Over (V60 or Chemex): The gold standard for Kenya. Use a medium-fine grind, 1:15 ratio, water at 200°F, and a 45-second bloom. The pour-over method highlights every layer of fruit and brightness.
- AeroPress: A medium-fine grind with a 2-minute steep produces a concentrated, intensely fruity cup. Try it as a long black with a splash of hot water.
- Drip: A medium grind works well for everyday brewing. The Kenya holds up beautifully and delivers a consistently vibrant, flavorful cup.
